Australians watch Grease and hear the singer’s music after her death

Throughout her 50+ year career, Olivia Newton-John has often felt bigger than life. So maybe it makes sense that Australians in death have flocked to remember the star by celebrating their craft on screen and through streams.

In homage to Newton-John’s career-building role in FatChannel Nine* aired the 1978 film Tuesday nights at 8:45 p.m., where it drew an average of 442,000 overnight viewers in the mainland’s five capital cities, according to OzTam figures.

The program won his time slot when a nation of mourners tuned in to see Newton-John deliver her most famous line: “Tell me about it, stud.”

Fat was also available to stream on Stan*, with the film currently trending on the platform alongside Newton-John’s 1980 film, Xanadu.

Newton-John’s death sparked a wave of remembrance, with friends, family and commentators rushing to commemorate the star. But for most Australians, enjoying their work was the best way to honor a talent that gave so much.

On Wednesday evening, Olivia Newton-John Essentials was the number one playlist on Apple Music Australia while Grease (The Original Movie Soundtrack) was album number two.

The duet window in the wall by Newton-John and her daughter Chloe Lattanzi was the number one video on Apple Music Australia. The song was released on Newton-John’s EP in 2021 Physical: hope.
