Australian Michael Matthews wins stage 14

Australian cycling star Michael Matthews has claimed what is arguably the biggest win of his career by winning stage 14 of the Tour de France after an exceptional escape performance.

Matthews, who last won the Tour five years ago, improved on his two previous second places in this year’s edition, beating all his challengers on a grueling 192.5-kilometre hilly ride from Saint Etienne to Mende.

After kicking home from a breakaway about 52km from home, Matthews had to fight his way back in the last two kilometers after being passed on a tough climb to the finish.

But the Canberra man, who competes for Australian team BikeExchange-Jayco, sped past Italy’s Alberto Bettiol again to win by 15 seconds after four and a half hours in the saddle on a hard, sun-drenched day.
