Austin police shove a woman to the ground on 6th Street in video

A video shows officers from the Austin Police Department pushing two people to the ground on 6th Street.

As the video begins, an officer pushes a woman and she falls onto her side. The police then attack a man near them, and an officer picks the woman off the ground. The officers then appeared to slap the man they attacked in the face.

The TikTok was posted by John Gutierrez (@wurkitlikemexican) on May 3rd and has been viewed almost 9 million times.

“Austin TX cops suck for this,” Gutierrez wrote in the video’s caption.

A spokesman for the Austin Police Department told the Daily Dot in a statement that he was aware of the video. “For every incident involving the use of force, we will review it to determine compliance with policies and laws,” the spokesman said.

Aware of its authenticity, some commenters on the video asked Gutierrez to release the entire video or provide proof that he recorded it himself. Others argued the woman who was being pushed tried to intervene when police arrested the man who was being pushed in the video.

“You get involved in an active scene. You better be ready,” commented @dustinmtzmtz. “She didn’t duck or move or anything.”

“She had nothing to do with it,” wrote @lloydthomas5. “She [could’ve] had a gun.”

“Why would you approach a cop in the middle of a confrontation?” @thebelleoftwitch questioned.

Others seemed to agree, stressing that the woman shouldn’t have touched the officer. It is not clear in the video if she actually makes contact with the police officer before he pushes her. Some commentators also pointed to the man who had been attacked.

“Look how they hit the guy on the floor,” said @walk4jesus1438. “Look how they trained us; everyone is just watching.”

The Daily Dot reached out to Gutierrez via TikTok comment.
