Atletico Madrid have mocked Manchester United over their failed bid to sign Cristiano Ronaldo’s international team-mate Joao Felix.

The struggling giants of the Premier League have engaged in an increasingly frantic late window trolley sprint to bolster Erik ten Hag’s struggling squad ahead of the transfer deadline.

Limited to just three signings so far this summer, Ten Hag has been frustrated in his attempts to strengthen the two areas of his squad that urgently need to be addressed.

An unhealthy reliance on midfielders Scott McTominay and Fred was brutally exposed in losses to Brighton and Brentford, while a striker lacking in confidence failed to score in the first two games of the season.

With Cristiano Ronaldo looking keen to leave and Anthony Martial, who impressed last season, absent through injury, United have made the signing of a striker a priority over the next two weeks.

United’s target ranged from experienced journeymen who would provide a short-term fix, like Marko Arnautovic and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, to rising superstars like Felix.

The 22-year-old was firmly on United’s radar before joining Atletico three years ago but instead opted for a move from Benfica to Spain.

It has taken some time for the forward to establish himself in Diego Simeone’s side but he is quickly beginning to fulfill the potential that marked him as the new Cristiano Ronaldo when he broke through at Benfica as a teenager.

His performances last season prompted United to make a £110million bid earlier this week, which was quickly rejected by Atletico, according to reports in Spain.

The La Liga club responded to the intense speculation by posting a picture of his talisman with the word ‘priceless’ on Twitter, seemingly mocking United’s attempts to snag his prize asset.

United have also been interested in Felix’s current team-mate Matheus Cunha but his €100m release clause is likely to prove an obstacle while the Brazilian is reportedly unsure about a move to Old Trafford.

The same was true for Ajax defender Jurrien Timber, who rejected United earlier in the window, while team-mate Antony will also devote his future to the Dutch club.

A move for Adrien Rabiot collapsed earlier this week after United failed to agree personal terms with the Juventus midfielder and the focus quickly shifted to trying to sign Casemiro from Real Madrid instead.
