A fisherman and his son made a surprising discovery of a great white shark over the weekend while sailing off the coast of New Jersey.
Jim Piazza had been fishing with his son Jayden when he almost came across the giant creature.
“The videos don’t do it justice,” Piazza, who fishes in New Jersey every summer, told NJ.com on Monday. “It was just casual there. I’ve never seen anything like it.’
Shortly after the discovery, the US Coast Guard boarded Piazza’s boat and conducted a security check.
It’s not uncommon to see a great white shark off the coast of New Jersey, but getting as close as Piazza and his son did is fairly rare. The International Shark Attack Record lists 15 confirmed and unprovoked shark attacks in New Jersey since 1837.
Piazza, who rents a house in Sea Isle for the summer, estimated the shark was about 12 feet long, just over half the length of his 23-foot fishing boat. Sharks this size typically weigh around 1,000 pounds.
He’d been fishing all morning with his son and one of his friends, and as they were walking home just after noon, someone yelled, “Hai, watch out!”
Piazza said he almost ran over the shark but was lucky enough to slow down enough for the group to pull out their phones and record the encounter.
“I didn’t think I would see a great white man there,” Piazza said.
The Pennsylvania native told the outlet that although he fishes almost every day, spotting the shark has already made it a summer to remember.
“I’ve never seen anything like it,” Piazza said.
Piazza’s video garnered thousands of views on social media and was shared by the US Coast Guard on their social media pages.
