At least 22 dead after explosive gas leak at Havana hotel

MIAMI – Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced that a gas leak was responsible for the deadly explosion at the Hotel Saratoga in Havana on Friday.

According to Cuban officials, a child was among the 22 dead. The 96-room hotel was not open to the public, but there were workers preparing the property to reopen on May 10.

Rescue workers searched the rubble for survivors. According to official figures, 64 people were injured.

Workers were pulling out a gas truck delivering natural gas to the hotel when the blast occurred, officials said.

According to Alexis Acosta Silva, the mayor of the Old Havana district, a cook smelled of gas in the kitchen and found a leak in the truck’s hose.

Diaz-Canel assured the public the explosion was accidental and had nothing to do with an attack or sabotage.
