Aston Villa beat Tottenham Hotspur 2-0

Tottenham Hotspur’s hopes of returning to the top four in the Premier League were dashed when they suffered a demoralizing 2-0 home defeat by Aston Villa on Sunday.

Antonio Conte’s lackluster side were without inspiration throughout the game and were punished after the break by goals from Emiliano Buendia and Douglas Luiz.

Tottenham’s French keeper Hugo Lloris, playing his first game since losing the World Cup final, was to blame for Buendia’s 50th-minute opener. And when Luiz added a second in the 73rd minute, the home fans started flocking to the exits.

Chants rang out against Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy as Villa claimed just a third win in their last 22 Premier League clashes with the Londoners.

Tottenham were booed at the final whistle as the defeat left them in fifth place with 30 points from 17 games, two points behind Manchester United, who have a game in hand, and 13 behind local rivals and leaders Arsenal.

If any of the fans who spent New Year’s Day at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium despite transport problems needed a little more sleep, they had ample opportunity to do so in a terrible first half.

Tottenham were slow in possession and lacked attacking spark, while Villa were equally unadventurous.

Villa keeper Robin Olsen, who surprisingly defended his place from Argentina hero Emiliano Martinez, was unconcerned and three yellow cards in the space of 10 minutes for Tottenham, including one for returning World Cup winner Cristian Romero, were pretty much the only topic of conversation for them the opening 37 minutes.
