Arsenal are set to complete their first signing of the summer transfer window after accepting a £3million bid for Sao Paulo youngster Marquinhos, according to reports in Brazil.

The 19-year-old attacker is available for a reduced fee as his contract expires after FIFA ruled that a five-year contract he was awarded in 2019 was only valid for three years – the maximum amount allowed on a player’s contract on their first professional contract.

Sao Paulo had tried to persuade Marquinhos to write new terms but he has turned down their offer and is keen to move to Europe.

Corresponding Globo Esporte, talks between Arsenal and Sao Paulo have progressed quickly and smoothly and the Gunners’ £3m offer has now been accepted.

The deal should be completed in the coming days, only a few details – such as a medical and contract signing – are missing.

Marquinhos, who has scored three goals in all competitions this season, is unlikely to be named in the Sao Paulo squad for Sunday’s game against Cuiaba due to his imminent transfer as the club’s coaching staff have been urged to consider life after the teenager to plan.

Marquinhos is believed to have been in talks to sign a preliminary contract with another, unnamed club in the last six months of his contract, although a move to Arsenal suits all parties and ensures Sao Paulo receive a fee.

Globo’s report also claims that Edu is trying to build a relationship with the Brazilian club similar to the one he shares with Ajax, which led to David Neres and Antony both moving to Amsterdam.

Wolves and Atletico Madrid had also expressed interest in Marquinhos’ signing but it’s Arsenal who have been the quickest to react to secure a deal.

It’s not the first time Edu has invaded his native Brazil. Arsenal’s technical director also brought Gabriel Martinelli out of relative obscurity at Ituano and landed a bargain for Pablo Mari while he was at Flamengo.

Marquinhos will join an Arsenal side that already have two of his compatriots – Martinelli and Gabriel Magalhaes – while a third could arrive in the form of Gabriel Jesus, who is Mikel Arteta’s top striker target.
