William Saliba has Marseille ‘in his heart’ and will play for the club next season rather than return Arsenal.
So says Gunners midfielder Matteo Guendouzi, who says he is trying to persuade the defender to stay in France.
Saliba suggested last week he would return to the Emirates this summer to compete for a spot in Mikel Arteta’s starting XI.
“I belong to Arsenal, I still have two years left there. I’ll be there for the pre-season,” said Saliba.
Signed for £30m from St-Etienne in 2019, the Frenchman has yet to play a single game for Arsenal but he had an impressive loan spell at Marseille last season.
But Guendouzi, who was also on loan from Arsenal to Marseille last season and will complete a permanent move to the club, believes Saliba will remain in the south of France next season.
‘Wilhelm [Saliba] now has Marseille in his heart,” said Guendouzi.
“I’m sure he will return to Marseille next season.
“I’ll keep pushing to keep him with us.”
Speaking about his own desire to stay at the club, Guendouzi says he is happy at Marseille and that is reflected in his return to France national team.
“I couldn’t have hoped for a better season than the one I had with Marseille.
“Even with the French national team, it’s simply my best season as a professional.”
