Gabriel praised William Saliba after his impressive performance Arsenal make their debut against Crystal Palace and describe their centre-back as ‘the best’.

Saliba made his long-awaited debut for Arsenal in the Premier League opener against Palace at Selhurst Park.

The Frenchman put on a solid performance to help Mikel Arteta’s side secure a 2-0 win thanks to Gabriel Martinelli’s first-half header and Marc Guehi’s own goal in the second.

Saliba was named player of the match by Jamie Carragher, who, along with his Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville, gushed about the 21-year-old defender.

Gabriel was also impressed by his team-mate’s performance, telling the Evening Standard: ‘To me he’s the best! He’s very young, very promising and a very good player.

“I’m so happy to play with him. He’s started in the Premier League now and he’s been so good.

“The team did very well. They showed intensity and everyone stayed together. It’s very difficult to play here, but our goalkeeper was strong.

“I believe in this team and it was very good. We conceded one goal and three very good points.’

Saliba joined Arsenal in 2019 but has yet to play for the club as he has been on loan for the last two seasons.

However, Arteta gave him his debut at Selhurst Park and was also surprised by his composed performance at the heart of Arsenal’s defence.

“You don’t really see that at 21, make your debut in the Premier League against that opponent, against physical players – and resolve that situation the way he did,” Arteta said.

“With this serenity, with this calm and with this presence. So kudos to the boy. I wanted to leave him alone and let him play, so we tried to develop this player.

“To sign him at the age of 18 and bring him back two years later is something unusual and he was so determined and ready to come here and has now proven he is ready.

“Now we’re putting the player in a really difficult environment to navigate and enjoy and be comfortable with.”

Arsenal will look to take six points from six when they take on Leicester City at the Emirates on Saturday.
