Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has revealed he always sends a member of his backroom team to spy on the opposing team during the warm-up before kick-off.

The Spaniard shared these tactical insights with Arsenal Women’s head coach Jonas Eidevall during a video in which the pair are promoting the signing of new deals with the club.

Arteta has extended his stay with the Gunners until 2025 after overseeing a campaign that promises Champions League qualification.

Posted to Arsenal’s during the promo Twitter On the side, Arteta and Eidevall exchanged their approaches to coaching when the topic of what they do during warm-up exercises came up.

Arteta revealed that while he doesn’t go onto the pitch before kick-off, he sends someone to spy on the opposing team’s training to see if they can learn anything about how they might play.

He said: “We have a nominee who is watching the opposition warm-up.

“So if they’re doing something like form or clearances or doing patterns in the last third and who’s playing on the right side. So at least we have an idea of what to do.

“But now in the Premier League it’s a nightmare. You think they’re going to play a certain way, you prepare, then you get the team list and it’s different!

“So in the end we often just have plan A, plan B, plan C. If they do that, we do that or do that.

“And now I’m just not telling them what to do until we have the team roster. So, I have two game schedules and ten minutes before we go out [I say for example], “OK, they play 5-3-2. So folks, that’s what we do.”

This approach has clearly paid off as Arsenal sit fourth in the table with four games to go but have yet to fend off fierce rivals Tottenham to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2016.

Fans and opposition alike will no doubt be on the lookout for Arteta’s spy ahead of the Gunners’ clash with Leeds on Sunday.
