Arsenal have been given a boost in their pursuit of Aaron Hickey, with Bologna’s new sporting director admitting they could decide to capitalize on the Scottish defender.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta is looking to sign a new left-back this summer and has identified Hickey as a top target.

Hickey has flourished at Bologna in Serie A since his £1.5million move from Hearts in 2020, making 48 appearances for the Italian club last season.

Arsenal’s Premier League rivals Brentford are also interested in signing Hickey, with the 20-year-old now valued at around £21million.

Bologna boss Marco Di Vaio has given Arsenal and Brentford hope of securing Hickey’s signature, admitting the defender could be “sacrificed” if the club seeks to fundraise.

“It could be, he’s one of those people that we could sacrifice, but if we don’t get decent offers, he’s likely to stay for another year,” Di Vaio said at a news conference.

“We have good potential to do well and get more than 50 points [next season]. We have to be good at funding signings and finding new players.

“If we take the right steps, we can replace them and keep everyone else.”

Arteta has decided to sign a new left-back after being disappointed with Nuno Tavares’ performances when the Portuguese star filled in for the injured Kieran Tierney last season.

The Arsenal manager is also looking to sign a new forward to replace the late duo of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette, as well as a new central midfielder.

Last month, Gunners legend Nigel Winterburn backed his former club’s move for Hickey and said the signing “fits the picture”.

“It’s a commitment that fits Arsenal, which I’ve talked about many times, to bring in young players to develop them,” Winterburn said Free SuperTips.

“Right back and left back is certainly a position that needs strengthening at depth and you want players to challenge first-choice players. If the form drops or there are injuries, then you jump in and keep your place until your own form drops.

“You want that competition for places in your squad. I haven’t seen many of him, just a few snippets, but some of the reports I’ve read.

“One of his old managers says he’s a bit like Philipp Lahm so it would be a great addition to the squad if he were.

“He’s only 19, so it’s a young age, but he’s already gained a lot of experience, which is incredible. This fits right in with the model Arsenal have been following through this season and it looks like they will continue that model next season as well.

Arsenal finished fifth in the Premier League last season, two points behind north London rivals Tottenham. They begin the 2022-23 campaign with a trip to Crystal Palace on August 5th.
