Arsenal failed to sign Adam Hlozek from Bayer Leverkusen with a late move, according to the forward’s father.

Mikel Arteta has already secured his priority target this summer when Gabriel Jesus was handed a £45m deal from Manchester City earlier this week.

But the Arsenal manager was keen to add another striker to his squad to make up for the departures of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette.

Hlozek is widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in Czech football, having scored 40 goals in 131 games for Sparta Prague since making his professional debut aged 16.

The 19-year-old has been monitored by Arsenal and even backed by their former midfielder Tomas Rosicky, who is now Sparta’s sporting director.

But the striker’s father Zbynek Hlozek says the Gunners let it be too late to make a move as his son joined Bayer Leverkusen for an initial fee of €13m (£11.1m) last month.

“There was Newcastle, they were somewhere else financially. Lyon, Seville, Dortmund, Bayern … but we wanted to give the next step a bit of meaning in order not to jump off to a mega club right away,” said Zbynek Hlozek iSport.cz.

“When Leverkusen were almost done, we heard about a big intervention from Arsenal. But the negotiations were already well advanced.

“Borussia Mönchengladbach was the same, they spoke to Adam personally twice in the spring.

“They were excited about him, but they didn’t have the financial clout.”
