Arsenal are battling Tottenham for £60million James Maddison this summer

Maddison, 25, has just two years left at Leicester City and has been linked with a move to the Gunners since last year.

Mikel Arteta will reportedly make another attempt to sign Maddison at the end of the season but will have to overcome Spurs who are also interested in his signature.

Maddison has enjoyed one of his best scoring campaigns to date, having netted 13 times for the Foxes this season.

Arsenal struggled to come up with goals similar to those of their rivals and Maddison’s creativity and goal-scoring ability would give their attack some much-needed power.

After his side’s defeat by Brighton, manager Mikel Arteta acknowledged his side needed to score more goals and said earlier in the week he expected another busy summer at the Emirates.

Earlier this year, Rodgers admitted some players could leave Leicester at the end of the season.

He said: “Now it’s my job to keep provoking and to develop the club and the team.

“Obviously when the players aren’t improving and developing, you need that healthy shake up. We need to reinvigorate the squad. In order for the squad to evolve and get better, you need to add better players.

“When a player is willing to move on, you can get maximum value and then reintroduce another player’s hunger and cravings. Hope you benefit from it.”

Both Arsenal and Tottenham are hoping to secure Champions League football to increase their appeal for potential summer signings like Maddison.

As it stands, Arsenal are currently fifth, three points behind fourth-placed Tottenham but with a game in hand.
