Arrest in Miami Gardens hit-and-run case that killed Miami Heat security guard

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. – Authorities have arrested a man accused of a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred more than a year ago.

The crash killed Stephan Maze, who worked as a security guard for the Miami Heat and was on his way to work when the tragic clash occurred.

His mother, Kesta Nelson, said she was thrilled to get the call she had been waiting for more than a year.

“He just said, ‘We’ve got him.’ That’s all he said. We’ve got him,” Nelson said.

Detectives arrested Brandon Hunter, who is now charged with vehicle murder and has left the scene of the accident.

Maze was struck on March 9 last year as he left his Miami Gardens home and headed to his security job at what was then American Airlines Arena that night.

Police said Hunter collided with him on North Miami Avenue and quickly left the scene.

For the following year, Nelson regularly distributed flyers and tended the lawn at the crash site.

The arrest is a small victory for a still grieving mother.

“The last time we spoke, he said, ‘Mom, we’ve been through a lot so far, but we made it. I have my own car, I have a good job. I work at the Miami Heat, which I love so much,'” Nelson said.

The Miami heat paid tribute to Maze and helped spread the word as police searched for Hunter.

Sunrise police stopped him in Broward County and he is being relocated back to Miami-Dade to face the family and the charges after being on the run for more than a year.
