A five-year-old boy is said to have shot his eight-year-old brother in what was believed to be a horrific accident.

Four children were in a house with their mother when a gunshot was fired Thursday afternoon, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to a 911 call at about 2:30 p.m. at the 2700 block of Shannon Valley Road near Pine Bluff in Arkansas and found an unresponsive eight-year-old boy in the home.

A coroner at the scene pronounced the child dead.

Authorities seized several weapons from the home.

“How safe were the guns?” Jefferson County Sheriff Lafayette Woods told KARK4 News.

“If the guns are reported to be safe, how did a five-year-old manage to get the gun in his hand and shoot and fire it?”

The shooting is being investigated as an accident, Woods said.

“This is a tragic incident that could have been avoided. I cannot stress enough that guns must be well secured and kept away from children at all times,” he said.

“Gun owners who fail to properly secure their firearms are a split second away from one of these tragedies happening in their home.”

Family members could be seen outside the home while MPs conducted the ongoing investigation.

The boy’s body was taken to the State Criminal Police Office for an autopsy.
