Apple is discontinuing the iPod after 20 years
Apple has discontinued the iPod music player after more than 20 years on the market.
The latest version of the device – the iPod Touch – has not been updated since 2019 and many of its features are now being updated integrated with other Apple devices and services.
Apple said it will continue to sell the Touch, the last remaining generation iPod, “while supplies last.”
Introduced in 2001 by the late Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, the iPod was the first MP3 player capable of storing 1,000 songs and boasting a 10-hour battery life.
The tech giant later produced several versions of the device – including the iPod mini and iPod nano – but many experts have long predicted that it would not remain in production long-term due to the rise of the iPhone and other smartphones that have cannibalized dedicated music players .
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, said the iPod “redefined how music was discovered.”
“Music has always been part of our core at Apple, and bringing it to hundreds of millions of users like the iPod has not only impacted the music industry — it has also redefined how music is discovered, listened to and shared,” he says called.
“Today, the spirit of the iPod lives on.
“We’ve built an incredible music experience into all of our products, from iPhone to Apple Watch to HomePod mini, Mac, iPad and Apple TV.
“And Apple Music delivers industry-leading sound quality with support for spatial audio – there’s no better way to enjoy, discover and experience music.”
