iOS 15 was received with golf course applause – solid new mods like SharePlay and Focus were added and Apple didn’t break any good features.

Speculations about iOS 16 say the new software could be the start of something bigger.

“Apple is planning major improvements to the lock screen, including wallpapers with widget-like features,” Apple insider Mark Gurman wrote for Bloomberg.

iOS is behind the curve when it comes to lock screen usability – Android phones have a fluid lock screen interface with apps and custom skins designed to use your phone without sacrificing your full attention.

Apple could be giving insights into iOS 16 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) on June 6th.

Gurman noted that Apple originally set this conference as the launch point for their “long-in-process mixed reality headset.”

Apple will likely fall short of that lofty goal, but the conference could still be a success if their other products land.

“In Messages, I expect more features like social media, especially in terms of audio messaging,” Gurman wrote. “The Apple TV’s operating system, tvOS, will get more smart home integrations.”

The physical headset delay might be frustrating for Apple employees and fans, but some bits of code for the headset could be written in iOS 16.

“Beta versions of iOS 16 – codenamed Sydney – are chock full of references to the headset and its interactions with the iPhone.”

According to Gurman, the headset will launch during iOS 16’s year-long lifecycle – suggesting the gear will be available between June 2022 and June 2023.

Apple has strong financial muscle as the world’s second-largest company, but they weren’t fully weather the 2022 economic downturn and supply chain woes.

The company’s future doesn’t depend on iOS 16, but a warm welcome never hurts.
