AP Top 25 Movies, By The Numbers: From Dollars To Donkeys

The films in first AP Top 25 films Ranking provides a wealth of numbers, facts, illustrations and little things, if you look at them a little too closely.

Here’s a look at the money, the protocols, the men and women, the little things, and the many, many animals involved best movies 2022

WORLD’S BIGGEST BOXING STATISTICS FOR 2022: $1.5 billion

“Top Gun: Maverick” (#7), was the box-office hit through late 2022, according to studio numbers compiled by Comscore. “Avatar: The Way of Water” (level 16) was a close second despite a December release (it surpassed “Top Gun” a few weeks in 2023).

MAXIMUM RUNTIME: 3 hours, 12 minutes

“Avatar: The Way of Water” was the longest, however “Babylon” (No. 18) and “RRR” (No. 6) also exceeded three hours.

AVERAGE RUNNING TIME: 2 hours, 11 minutes

The shortest is “EO” (No. 23) at one hour, 26 minutes.

CHARACTERS IN THE LONGEST TITLE: 33

That is “Everything everywhere at once” (#2) but when subtitles are factored in, it ties in “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” (No. 10).

ACCENT MARKS IN TITLES: 1

“Tar” (No. 3), often stylized in all caps, is the only film title with a diacritic. It is also the second shortest title after “EO”.

ACTORS CREDITED IN SEVERAL FILMS ON LISTING: 5

Cate Blanchett plays the eponymous elite conductor Lydia Tár and tunes in to the monkeys spazzatura and puppets “Guillermo Del Toro’s Pinocchio” (No. 13).

Jenny Slate Voices of the title “Marcel the Shell with shoes on” (No. 20) and plays Debbie the Dog Mom in Everything Everywhere All at Once, while Samantha Morton stars in both “She said” (No. 19) and “The whale” (connected for No. 16).

Enter Jayme Lawson “The Woman King” (No. 5) and “Till” (No. 22) James Hong has his say “To redden” (No. 24) and is in Everything Everywhere at Once.

AGE OF OLDEST LEADER: 67

Brendan Gleesonthe oldest lead actor on the list, is arguably the co-lead of “The Banshees of Inisherin” (No. 1), although he is promoted as a supporting actor for awards.

If the list is the only documentary “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” (No. 15), his subject – photographer Nan Goldin – is believed to be the oldest at 69 years old.

Sexagenarians also found representation with Tom cruise from Top Gun: Maverick and Michelle Yeoh from “Everything everywhere at once” both 1962 babies.

AGE OF YOUNGEST ACTOR: 13

Frankie Corio is about the same age as her teenager “After Sun” (No. 11) Figure Sophie.

CAMEOS OF CELEBRITIES IN ‘GLASS ONION’: 10

Sighted in the Knives Out Sequel: Angela Lansbury, Stephen Sondheim, Hugh Grant, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Serena Williams, Ethan Hawke, Jake Tapper, Natasha Lyonne, Joseph Gordon-Levitt (voice) and Yo-Yo Ma. Two – Lansbury and sondheim – are now deceased.

ROLLS FOR DONKEYS: 3

Three films on the list had significant — and tragic — roles for the furry pack animals. The name of the titular donkey in “EO” derives from the Polish version of the sound donkeys make. “The Banshees of Inisherin” Contains a miniature donkey named Jenny (played by a miniature donkey named Jenny screaming in two Golden Globes Talk). Enter the nameless wounded donkey “Triangle of Sadness” (No. 21) is a mysterious howl in the night before making a brief but unforgettable appearance.

DONKEYS IT TAKES TO PLAY EO: 6

Their names are Marietta, Tako, Hola, Ettore, Rocco and Mela.

Movies with armed animals: 2

NT Rama Rao Jr. hurls a leopard at British soldiers “RRR” and Slate swings a leash spitz on Yeoh in “Everything Everywhere All At Once.”

MOVIES WITH TITULARY ANIMALS NOT IN THESE MOVIES: 2

“The whale” has no whales, and “No Bears” (No. 25) has no bears.

DIRECTOR DEBUT FEATURES: 3

“Aftersun” directed by Charlotte Wells; “Turning Red” directed by Domee Shi and “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” directed by Dean Fleischer Camp.

FEATURES DIRECTED BY STEVEN SPIELBERG: 33

Of the directors with films on the list, Steven Spielbergat the top of “The Fabelmans”, (No. 8) directed the most by far.

This is Shi, the Canadian director of Pixar’s Turning Red.

AGE OF OLDEST DIRECTOR: 84

“Everything Everywhere All at Once” (one of the “Daniels”, Daniel Kwan, is Chinese American), No. 4 “nope” ( Jordan Peele ), “The Woman King” (Gina Prince-Blythewood), “RRR” (SS Rajamouli), #12 “decision to go” ( Park Chanwook ), “Pinocchio”, “Until” (Chinonye Chukwu), “Turning Red” and “No Bears” ( Jafar Panahi ).

Top Gun: Maverick came 36 years after the original, and the story picks up steam again after almost that much time. While an “Avatar” sequel took 13 years to complete, it’s conveniently set 15 years later. “glass onion” was released a more typical three years after the original Knives Out.

BASED ON A TRUE STORY: 9

Take this framework with a pinch of salt as they vary widely in how much truth they contain. The main characters of “She Said” “Until” and “Elvis” (No. 14) are real people. So the focus is on the two friends who have become friends “RR” but the events of the film are almost pure speculation.

It’s not called “The Spielbergs,” though “The Fable Men” is a thinly veiled autobiography of its director. “Babylon”, “queen” and “Women in Conversation” are based on real events, but almost all of the characters – and many events – are fictional. All The Beauty and the Bloodshed, on the other hand, is a documentary.

“Pinocchio” and “Marcel the Shell with Shoes On” use stop-motion animation, while “Turning Red” is computer animation.
