Antonio Rüdiger’s advisor has fueled speculation Chelsea defender could make controversial move to Manchester United this summer

Erik ten Hag will look to strengthen his new club’s rearguard in the summer, with question marks hanging over the future of Eric Bailly, Victor Lindelof and beleaguered captain Harry Maguire.

Players such as Villarreal’s Pau Torres and Matthijs de Ligt, a former Ten Hag protege at Ajax, have been linked with a move to Old Trafford, as has Chelsea contract rebel Rudiger.

Chelsea appear to have lost hope of retaining the Germany international’s services as talks over a new contract have stalled due to the government sanctions the ailing west London club are currently operating under.

Rudiger had been trying to match Chelsea’s top earners and earn a salary befitting his status as one of the Premier League’s toughest and most combative defenders.

His importance to the cause was underscored by his absence midweek when Chelsea scored four goals in a defeat by Arsenal at Stamford Bridge that saw understudy Andreas Christensen and Malang Sarr make costly mistakes.

The likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona remain interested in signing the 29-year-old but United appear likely to offer competition given Rudiger’s agents’ social media activity.

Alongside a post from former United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, Saif Rubie wrote: “Let’s see if I can help revive this sleeping giant.”

When asked about summer recruitment, interim boss Ralf Rangick was coy in his press conference ahead of Saturday’s competitive game against Arsenal.

He said: “That is a question for the board. My focus is on the last remaining games. It’s better you talk to the board.

“It’s obvious that some players are letting their contracts expire. There may be a few others who – despite having contracts – are already on loan and still want to be loaned out or leave the club.

“A significant change and rebuilding will be necessary, that’s clear, but how many players and what positions, as I said, I haven’t spoken to Erik personally yet.

“If he asks my opinion personally, I’m willing to talk to him about my experiences, but on the other hand he has his own ideas too.”
