Antonio Ruediger says he never thought of joining another club Real Madrid this summer despite interest from Manchester United.

The German has signed a four-year deal with the Spanish giants after leaving Chelsea on a free transfer.

United were also believed to be vying for the 29-year-old’s signature, with Erik ten Hag looking to bolster his defense following Harry Maguire’s struggles last season.

However, Rudiger has revealed that a move to Old Trafford was never in the planning, despite reports.

Speaking to Marca, he said: “While there have been a lot of talks during that period, to be honest, I only considered Madrid or Chelsea.”

Rudiger was highly sought after after becoming a mainstay at Stamford Bridge under Thomas Tuchel.

He made over 54 appearances last season and featured in Chelsea’s Champions League triumph in 2021.

With his Premier League experience, Ruediger could have helped mend United’s leaking backline.

The Red Devils conceded 57 league goals last season – their worst tally in the top eight – with Raphael Varane struggling since arriving from Real Madrid.

During his time as interim manager at Old Trafford, Ralf Rangnick berated United’s defense after giving up several leads in games last season.

He said: “How many games have we led 1-0 or 2-0 and ended up taking just one point – it’s easily six, eight points we should have. But it puts us back in the same situation that we just didn’t defend well enough.

“If you want to defend properly in this league, where every team has their individual weapons on the pitch, you simply have to defend. They have to be physical, you shouldn’t just let them past and through our lines like that. That’s what this team doesn’t do well enough.
