Anti-abortion Senate Democrat supports abortion rights bill

WASHINGTON – Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, one of the last lawmakers on Capitol Hill who describes himself as a “pro-life Democrat,” said Tuesday he would support a bill to add abortion rights to federal laws after the leaked draft decision of the… Supreme Court would overturn the landmark Roe v. Calf.

Casey, who is serving his third term, is not just any Democrat on the abortion debate. His father, a former two-year governor of Pennsylvania who opposed abortion rights, signed legislation that spawned another landmark abortion case, Planned Parenthood v. Casey.

Now Sen. Casey is able to watch the Supreme Court Roe v. Wade may fall two years before his re-election, while his party activists mobilize against such a decision.

He is formulating his new position in response to what he describes as an unanticipated move by congressional Republicans to try to effectively ban abortion nationwide.

Casey said he will support the Democrats’ bill if there is a final vote on it. And he said he never voted for, and doesn’t support, a total abortion ban.

“I think a lot of Americans are just beginning to understand the Republican position, which in many cases is not just a ban, but in many states it’s a ban outright,” Casey said in an interview.

He told Politico in 2018 “that the pro-life Democrat description is accurate:” for him.

But he told the AP Tuesday that Congressional Republicans have moved from decades in which they said they wanted states to have a say on abortion to pursuing legislation to ban it everywhere after six weeks — before many women even know they are pregnant.

“I think this is a new and significant development in their approach,” he said.

A Senate vote on a Democrat bill to protect abortion rights nationwide will not happen unless Democrats can muster the votes needed to bypass procedural hurdles. They are expected to fail in a test vote on Wednesday.

Casey won his Senate election as an anti-abortion Democrat, though proponents have accused him of abandoning the cause through his more dovish positions.

“Because of his actions and words, I believe Sen. Casey has abandoned the legitimate use of the pro-life label,” said Michael Geer, president of the Pennsylvania Family Institute, which opposes abortion rights.

After the draft statement was released last week, Casey said he had “serious concerns about what the breaking of nearly 50 years of legal precedent would mean for women in states that enact near-total or total abortion bans.”

Referring to the Senate, he said, “Congress should work to reduce the number of abortions and unwanted pregnancies and do much more to support women and families.”

In the past he has pushed for measures he says have been shown to reduce the number of abortions, such as B. The promotion of health care, contraception and programs to support women and children.

Still, Casey broke with Democrats on the vote in 2018 and 2020 to introduce bills banning abortions after 20 weeks, saying he supports the so-called Hyde Amendment, which blocks federal funding for abortions.

But he also voted with Democrats to support federal funding for planned parenthood and access to contraception.

Casey opposed all three of former President Donald Trump’s nominees for the Supreme Court, who now make up half of his conservative bloc.
