Robert Garcia has revealed that Anthony Joshua has assembled a new team to ensure he is in the right frame of mind to beat Oleksandr Usyk in their rematch this summer.
Joshua will face Usyk in Saudi Arabia in August after losing his IBF, WBO and WBA heavyweight titles to the undefeated Ukrainian last September.
The Briton has made big changes to his camp ahead of his second fight, with longtime trainer Rob McCracken no longer part of the picture, joining Angel Fernandez this year.
Garcia, who has worked with the likes of Marcos Maidana, Nonito Donaire and younger brother Mikey Garcia, has also joined the team and revealed there have been a number of new additions who are “helping the Joshua mindset”.
Garcia said YouTube show Robert Garcia Unfiltered: “A lot of fighters have taken a loss – like probably after the Andy Ruiz Jr fight – they have taken a loss and they think it’s never going to happen.
“So it affected him, it affected him mentally.
“He was probably thinking, ‘Maybe this is the end of my career, maybe this is it,’ so he had a lot of things on his mind.
“I think that’s one of the main things that has influenced Anthony and that’s what I want to change here – me and Angel and other help he has.
“He put together a team that’s not just me and Angel, pulls it together, prepares the game plan and coaches it with the right strategy or sparring partners to go out there and perform.
“He hired other people who are also very smart.
“No boxing trainers, just other people who could help him with his mindset.
“Someone who is with him and thinks positively with him. Everyone around him is positive.
“Everyone around him is pushing him to the limit, to what he was doing before he lost his first fight.
“He has to know and believe that he’s still as good as this or he’s going to get even better than he was before he was first champion when he went out and knocked everyone out.”
Garcia detailed how losing to Usyk – like that to Andy Ruiz Jr in 2019 – affected Joshua “mentally” and insisted it’s an issue they will be confident in tackling.
“It goes to your head. We need to change that,” Garcia continued.
“Because he already did. He has already won the gold medal against the best fighters in the world.
“And then, as a pro, he also beat the best to become the world heavyweight champion.
“We didn’t see that before he lost. After he lost we saw that it’s more of a mental problem, so we’re working on that.
“We have to push him in training and in sparring. The work gets done, all he has to do is go out and perform.’
