Andy Reid appreciates Tyrann Mathieu after Chiefs departure: ‘I’m glad he has a chance to go home’

Tyrann Mathieu was an integral part of the Kansas City Chiefs’ Super Bowl LIV win and contributed to his All-Pro résumé during his three years with the franchise. The Chiefs were on a 50-year Super Bowl drought when Mathieu showed up, and he used an All-Pro season to catapult the defense into a championship unit.

Mathieu was one of the stalwarts on Andy Reid’s only Super Bowl championship team. He joined the New Orleans Saints after Kansas City decided not to re-sign him this offseason, but Reid is grateful for what Mathieu has brought to the organization.

“I’m glad he has the chance to go home and play like he’s here with the Saints,” Reid said Monday. “You have a good football player and a great person. I know he will be missed in the community for the things he did there. I really loved having him here. great kid

“Someone else has to step in and get their game back on. We’re lucky to have him here where the guys can see how he rolls and how he leads.”

Mathieu finished last season with 76 tackles, three interceptions and three passes defended, winning another Pro Bowl selection with the Chiefs. As a primary defender, he only allowed a 65.9 passer rating in cover. In three seasons with Kansas City, Mathieu won two First Team All-Pro selections and two Pro Bowl selections while also having 13 interceptions.

Mathieu’s 26 interceptions are the most in the NFL among safeties since he joined the league in 2013, and his three first-team All-Pro selections equate to Patrick Peterson, Jalen Ramsey and Richard Sherman for most among active defensemen . Mathieu has 26 career interceptions, four forced fumbles, six fumble recoveries, 10 sacks and 610 tackles.

Playing for the Saints was the only choice for Mathieu given the opportunity to return to the bayou after attending high school in New Orleans and college at LSU. Mathieu shares the same feelings as Reid and hopes to continue his elite game in New Orleans.

“I think I knew where I wanted to be from the start,” Mathieu said last week. “It’s all about coming together and aligning from there and like I said I’m sure there have been a lot of people who have been praying for me and rooting for me and it just feels good to see how everything somehow comes together.

“I’ve been manifesting this for a while. A lot of former team-mates know that, but to have this opportunity means a lot to me.”
