Bucharest: Romanian prosecutors have arrested controversial internet personality and former professional kickboxer Andrew Tate on suspicion of human trafficking, rape and forming an organized crime group after he reportedly revealed his whereabouts during a social media spat with environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
Tate, who was banned from many social media platforms for misogynistic comments and hate speech, and his brother Tristan were being held for 24 hours along with two Romanian suspects, prosecutors from the Unit Against Organized Crime said in a statement after touring their properties in Bucharest had searched.
The Tate brothers have been under criminal investigation since April.
The British national trolled Thunberg this week, posting about his gas-guzzling cars that he owns 33 with “enormous emissions”. It culminated in him posting a video of himself with a cigar and pizza boxes printed with details of a Romanian restaurant.
Thunberg’s Twitter account is known for taking out several high-profile people, including Donald Trump.
Prosecutors declined to comment, but their attorney confirmed the couple had been arrested.
“The four suspects … appear to have formed an organized crime group with the aim of recruiting, harboring and exploiting women by forcing them to create pornographic content to be viewed on specialized websites for a fee,” they said prosecutors.
“They would have won important sums of money.”
