Police from the Eastern Beaches Police District Command responded to reports that Melbon had fled just after noon Monday.

Officers were later told that Melbon allegedly assaulted a woman at her home on Esperance Close in Little Bay before stealing a vehicle on the same street and forcing the woman to drive him to south Sydney.

According to police, the car came to a stop on Battye Avenue in Beverley Park and Melbon escaped from the car. After a brief pursuit on foot, he was arrested on the street around 1:05 p.m.

He was taken to Kogarah Police Station, where he was charged with escaping lawful custody, two counts of aggravated burglary and committing a serious criminal offense, taking and driving a vehicle without the consent of the owner, and two counts of taking and detaining a vehicle person with the intention of gaining an advantage.

He was denied bail and is due to appear in Sutherland Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

There were no reports of anyone being seriously injured. One of the women was taken to the Prince of Wales Hospital for observation.
