The family of an American college student studying abroad in France are urgently searching for him after he disappeared weeks ago.

Kenneth DeLand Jr. was reported missing after failing to show up for classes at the University of Grenoble Alpes in France.

DeLand, 22, is a student at St. John Fisher University in Rochester, New York. His family and friends have not heard from him since November 27, when he sent messages to several people on WhatsApp.

DeLand was last seen boarding a train on Wednesday November 30th. The train headed towards Valence, France, about 60 miles from the university.

According to his family, DeLand ate breakfast, made lunch for the day, and packed a change of clothes, his wallet, and his cell phone. He left his other belongings – including a computer and phone charger – with his host family in Grenoble.

Before leaving, he spoke to his neighbor, who said the student was “positive.”

DeLand’s parents said their son is enjoying his time in Europe. “He was traveling, he was having a great time,” said his father, Kenneth DeLand Sr WHAM.

A few days later, investigators were able to trace him to the town of Montélimar, south of Valence. He was last seen at a sporting goods store in town, where he spent about $8.40.
