Android users can no longer purchase eBooks, audiobooks, or music from the Kindle, Audible, or Amazon Music apps.

Google has made a change to its policy that forces developers to process in-app purchases of “digital goods and services” through the Google Play Store.

For a time, Amazon was allowed to collect in-app payments through the Google Play Store — a freedom not granted to every company.

But Google wants to limit Amazon’s freewheeling, and the new policy went into effect on June 1.

Under the new policy, Amazon would have to pay commission fees to Google.

Amazon chose to remove the ability to buy altogether rather than give a competitor a portion of its earnings.

Amazon addressed the changes in a statement.

“To comply with Google Play Store policies, you can no longer purchase new content through the app. You can create a reading list in the app and buy from the Amazon website through your browser.”

Other brands and companies aren’t thrilled with Google’s new policy either.

Match Group, Tinder’s parent company, is suing Google over its claims for a whopping 15% commission.

Google hit back, saying in a blog written by an executive that Match Group is “trying to dump our investments rather than being a responsible partner.”

Google argues that their Google Play Store provides the infrastructure – security, fraud prevention, etc. – that makes this form of e-commerce possible, which is why they are entitled to fair service fees.

Amazon’s ability to sell physical goods through the Android remains untouched – but the tech giant needs to find a new way to monetize downloadable music, books and audiobooks.
