The world is waiting for you, says Longtime Amazing race host Phil Keoghanwho is once again gearing up for another season of the Emmy-winning CBS series.
The show returns for its 34th episode with a whole host of new teams – including the former NFL coach RexRyan and big brother 23‘s Derek Xiao and Claire Rehfuss – Ready to race in countries like Jordan, Germany, Austria, Italy, France, Spain, Iceland and more.
“The world is opening up a lot,” Phil tells exclusively Us weekly about the shooting of the last season. “I think part of the challenge is that every country you travel to has different COVID protocols. And so some are very restrictive and some are really forgiving. And so we kind of have to stick to the rules that are mandated here in the United States no matter what, and that makes it difficult because we’re an international show and you have to adapt and rotate a lot.
One way they’re shaking things up this season is that they don’t have any non-elimination stages or about-faces. “It’s just about mixing things up and keeping things exciting, you know?” says the native New Zealander. “You always want to do something different and this is definitely one of those things. And with a show that’s been going for as long as we’ve had you, you don’t want to deviate too much from what’s working.”
He goes on to explain, “If you look at successful shows that have been going for decades, I think the reason they’ve worked time and time again — whether it’s a game show or whether it’s a game show 60 minutes – is because things haven’t changed and people know what they’re getting and the format works. And I think that’s true Amazing race. You don’t want to reinvent something that works. Even though we made such small changes, at the end of the day I think why Amazing race works is because the original format is really good.”
Phil shares how the show has changed over the past 21 years Us, “It was much more difficult to communicate and much more difficult with the technology available. Now we’re embracing the fact that people around the world recognize us because when we’re running through an airport, someone pulls out their phone and goes live on Instagram and suddenly they’re Instagramming the world what we’re doing. And you have to accept that because you can’t hide it.”
He adds: “I think our fans in general will always find people who love to spoiler, they love to be the ones giving out information. …But I would say about our fans that they are very respectful of other fans and don’t do that. TRUE Amazing race Fans don’t throw out spoilers and ruin it for everyone else.”
The amazing race Premieres on CBS Wednesday, September 21 at 10 p.m. ET.
