Alastair Campbell’s recent interview on Piers Morgan Uncensored ended in an unexpected way when he said goodbye to the air to continue the TV show he had paused.
On Wednesday evening, Piers welcomed Alastair and political commentator Douglas Murray to his eponymous program TalkTV to discuss the fallout in Parliament after several Tory resignations in Boris Johnson’s government.
While the presenter might have expected the chat to get heated, he might not have expected former Downing Street Speaker Alastair to leave early and log off as he told his colleague: “See you later.”
After it was revealed that the Prime Minister had fired Michael Gove, Alastair said: ‘That’s what happens when you elect the highest office in the country, one of the most serious jobs in the world, someone who is basically not serious’.
Douglas responded by firing back at Alastair and stating, “First off, I don’t think it’s appropriate for Alastair Campbell to throw pseudo-medical terms about political leaders, and frankly…” before Alastair interrupted to say, “Listen ‘I can say what I want!’
Piers tried to quell the argument by insisting his two guests “could say whatever the hell you want” and were on a show called Piers Morgan Uncensored.
He instructed Alastair to “let Douglas speak” while also requesting a “timeout.”
“Alastair, let Douglas speak, then answer, you’re both uncensored, say what you want!” said the 57-year-old.
Alastair, who worked closely with Tony Blair when he was Labor Party leader and Prime Minister, told his host: “Piers, if you can get me to speak to these right-wing zeros who are part of the problem in this country anyway… People like Murray and The Spectator where Johnson spawned, they’re part of the problem – they created this beast!
“You created this man who has no morals, no honesty, no objectivity, no openness.”
Seeming increasingly frustrated by the turn of the conversation, Alastair informed Piers that it was time for him to say goodbye.
‘Piers, I gotta tell you, I thought I wanted to talk to you because you’re quite a serious person. I got Sherwood to take a break downstairs, pick up Douglas Murray, bring him back and put him in his 55-tuppence-free bin and see you later, good luck,’ he said.
“Thank you Alastair Campbell,” Piers replied as Alastair disappeared from the screen, while Douglas grinned as he quipped, “Love.”
“Unfortunately, we lost Alastair Campbell,” Piers added as Douglas became the only guest on screen.
Piers Morgan Uncensored airs weekdays from 8 p.m. on TalkTV.
