Airbnb host waives cleaning fees but raises nightly rate

An Airbnb host on TikTok claims he decided to ditch his cleaning fee but increase the nightly rate for his homes, resulting in 100% occupancy of his properties. His video sparked a discussion about additional fees on the accommodation platform.

The video was posted by user Norman (@normanbnb), which is mostly about his ownership of 30 homes listed on Airbnb. The video shows a recent payout from stays on the Airbnb platform totaling over $5,000.

The Daily Dot reached out to Norman via Instagram direct message for more information.

“By eliminating the cleaning fee, you increase your nightly rate and your 30 Airbnb homes are now 100% occupied,” Norman wrote in a text overlay on the video.

Viewers speculated that this move works well for TikToker as people would rather pay more up front than have a lower sticker price and additional fees.

“Yup,” wrote one commenter. “I prefer higher nightly rates and no cleaning fees.”

“It’s all a mental game,” said another user. “Just like eBay, free shipping offers sell better, even if the price is slightly inflated to account for shipping costs.”

“I think it’s honestly because of the transparency,” added a third, “as a customer I hate it when a listing price in the search menu is much lower than the actual price.” Mind game, maybe, but it’s just more transparency imo.”

Several shared that they specifically chose not to book certain Airbnb stays because the cleaning fee was so high.

“Some of those cleaning fees are impeccable…like 200 one-night charges…bud,” said one user.

“Every time I haven’t booked an Airbnb, it’s because of the cleaning fee,” claimed another. “I am sure that many people feel the same way.”

“Yes, because I don’t want to pay 300 for a one-night cleaning fee,” said another TikToker.
