AFL Preseason; Signings, list places, Liam Stocker signed from St Kilda

He was a surprise departure from Carlton at the end of the 2022 season but Liam Stocker has found a new home at St Kilda via the additional selection phase as a rookie.

Former Carlton defender Liam Stocker says he is determined to make the most of his AFL lifeline after officially joining the St Kilda list.

The man, who was discarded from Carlton after four years in navy, was picked up by the Saints on Friday under supplemental selection rules.

He has impressed new manager Ross Lyon in recent weeks after the club gave him the chance to train at Moorabbin.

The No. 19 draft pick was used primarily as a defender at Carlton, but was also able to join the midfield mix with the Saints.

He has a penetrating kick and is strong on the ball, but his fitness has been an issue at Ikon Park, where he has averaged 13 dismounts in 28 games.

The club had one more spot to fill by February 15. Former Essendon Tall Utility Josh Eyre also trains at the club.

Stocker, who turns 23 on Monday, said he was looking forward to starting a new chapter in the Red, White and Black.

“I couldn’t be happier to sign up as a Saint,” Stocker said.

“The last few months have reaffirmed to me how badly I want this and I really believe I can contribute at the AFL level. I am very grateful to my coaches and those around me for giving me this chance.

“As a lifelong Saints fan, I look forward to seeing what the club’s 150th anniversary will bring and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Football manager Geoff Walsh said Stocker had several strengths and deserved his second chance.

“We’re delighted to be able to offer Liam a spot on our list for the upcoming season,” said Walsh.

“Liam has not held back over the past few months and has really shown us he has the right qualities and mindset that we believe will make a difference within our squad.

“His competitive work is one of his greatest strengths, as is his ability to use both feet and we look forward to seeing him make the most of his chance at St Kilda.”

St Kilda are on the hunt for a new list manager after James Gallagher resigned last month.

Carlton’s former list manager Stephen Silvagni, who originally picked Stocker for the Blues in 2018 as part of a controversial pick deal with Adelaide, has been touted as a likely candidate for the new list job.

Silvagni has not commented publicly on whether he is interested in making a comeback on club land.

Silvagni worked with Lyon during his first tenure at St Kilda.
