AFL 2023 Pre-Season: Latest Track News & Updates, Injuries, St Kilda, Max King, Liam Stocker

A relaxed Ross Lyon watched the Saints squeeze their thongs in practice today, while Liam Stocker and a former Don vied for a spot on the list. Plus an update on Max King and other injured Saints.

Ross Lyon kept a keen eye on training today as his Saints prepare for the 2023 season.

He will be on the lookout for a replacement for Max King at least earlier in the year as the star striker recovers from injury.

A few trials were also put through their paces.

Stay tuned here for more preseason news.

Star key forward Max King is still sidelined from main training as he continues his recovery from a shoulder reconstruction earlier last month.

However, the 22-year-old had a smile on his face as he watched early in the session before hitting the gym.

When asked how his recovery was going from a regular track observer on the sidelines, King replied, “Getting there, slow.”

While the Saints haven’t set a precise timeframe for King’s return, he will at least miss the early part of the season, in a major blow to the club.

King scored 52 goals in 22 games last season – 18 Majors more than any other St Kilda player.

Sophomore midfielder Marcus Windhager appears to have put on a few pounds over the summer.

Windhager has been a regular at Moorabbin’s gym but has not lost his running skills after finishing second in the St Kilda 3K time trial before Christmas.

The St Kilda Next Generation Academy product was a bargain pick 47 in the 2021 National Draft and averaged 11.8 disposals from 18 games on debut last season.

New St Kilda manager Ross Lyon appears to be enjoying himself as pre-season begins.

Long known as a tough disciplinarian, Lyon are clearly looking more relaxed in his second stint with the Saints.

Lyon were front and center on the first day of pre-season training, regularly smiling and applauding the players for a job well done.

Jack Hayes and Nick Coffield are still working to regain fitness after suffering a cruciate ligament injury early last year.

Both ran a few laps before Coffield hit the gym and Hayes did other lighter work on the sidelines.

Jade Gresham (knee) completed part of the main session before joining the rehab group for lighter exercise, as did Josh Battle (ankle).

Jack Billings still has light duties following back surgery last September to correct a herniated disc.

Midfielder Zak Jones spent the morning with King in the gym.

Former Carlton defender Liam Stocker and former Essendon forward Josh Eyre are still training with the Saints in their quest for a spot on the club’s roster during the Supplementary Selection Period.

Stocker worked hard during Monday’s session while Eyre showed himself to be an athletic tall man who moved well.

The Saints have two available picks to fill through the SSP or keep open for the midseason rookie draft.
