ABC renewed American Idol for its 21st season, two weeks before the season 20 finale.

That shows the network’s faith in its singing reality series. By comparison, it’s been months since The Voice wrapped its 21st season and NBC still hasn’t announced its renewal status.

Here’s what you need to know about the American Idol renewal.

American Idol returns for Season 21

American Idol will be back on ABC for another season.

This will be season 21 overall, but there’s a chance it will be known as season 6 when it comes out in 2023. That’s because it’s the sixth season on ABC and the network started counting the seasons when it acquired the hit series.

However, since this season is known almost exclusively as Season 20, thanks to the anniversary justification, there’s a chance it could go back to history and call it Season 21.

The announcement came with no notes or comments from the network, the stars of the series, or the production team.

However, with the renewal, ABC has touted its ratings this season, which are actually 15% higher than season 19 when it comes to the 18-49 adult demo ratings. These ratings also take into account viewership across all platforms over 35 days.

This is also good news for fans who still prefer to watch on cable or terrestrial TV, as American Idol will remain on ABC. The Disney series “Dancing with the Stars” will move to the Disney+ streaming platform.

There were some rumors that American Idol would also be making a move to conquer the ever-growing wireless streaming audience. American Idol will remain on ABC for the time being and may wait and see how DWTS succeeds in streaming. There are 125 million people who subscribe to Disney+ streaming.

Who will be back for American Idol next season?

The extension did not include any information about the judges or the host. That can often change at the last minute Mentor Bobby Bones left the series after the auditionsbut before it aired this season.

If there’s a good bet, it’s this one Ryan Seacrest will be back as host. He has hosted American Idol since season one and is a mainstay of the show.

The other hosts – Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie – will likely make their decision over the course of the summer on whether to re-sign and return to American Idol.

American Idol airs Sunday nights at 8:7c on ABC.
