A woman has attacked her friend after finding out her boyfriend had texted her.

Zoe Hopkins, 34, was drunk on February 15 this year while waiting outside her friend’s Carmarthen flat to return home.

Prosecutor Megan Jones said Hopkins followed her friend into the common area of the apartment block, then grabbed her, threw her to the ground and “smashed” her head into the steps several times.

The 28-year-old victim managed to get to her feet and run to her apartment, but Hopkins followed her upstairs and attacked her friend again.

Hopkins grabbed the woman by the hair, pulled her head down and kicked her in the face while accusing her of texting her boyfriend.

The victim then managed to run to a neighboring apartment, from where the police were called.

She was bruised but did not seek medical treatment and said in a victim impact statement read to Swansea Crown Court the attack had made her anxiety worse.

After her arrest and questioning, Hopkins responded with “no comment” to everything she was asked.

Mitigatingly, David Singh said the accused was someone who experienced a “difficult upbringing” and had substance abuse problems.

He said “there may have been a level of jealousy” that influenced Hopkins’ behavior after she took offense at text messages her friend had sent to her boyfriend and his response to them.

Hopkins, of Russell Terrace in Carmarthen, had previously pleaded guilty to committing an assault that actually caused bodily harm.

She has 16 prior convictions for 22 offenses, including 10 for violence – most recently for battery three years ago.

Recorder Paul Lewis QC said it was a prolonged attack “motivated by an element of jealousy”.

He said it was compounded by Hopkins’ previous criminal record and after she admitted she was drunk at the time.

With a 20% discount for her guilty plea, Hopkins was sentenced to 16 months in prison.

She will remain incarcerated until half of that time before being released with a license to serve the rest of the community.
