MANY baby names are inspired by the animal kingdom: Leo, Wren, Wolf, Kitty, and Sable are great examples.
A social media user spotted a bizarre baby name in the wild and immediately posted it online, leaving commentators laughing.
A Reddit user first shared the non-traditional name on the NameNerdCirclejerk forum, where commenters debate, compliment, and critique the best and worst baby names from around the web.
The original poster shared a photo taken at a local children’s playground, where a party room was being set up for a children’s celebration.
Chalk paint on the party room window read “Happy Birthday, Ratleen!” in glowing bubble letters.
Commentators were quick to pick up on the bizarre, rodent-inspired name — and speculate as to its origins.
One person said parents probably wanted to name their child after the main character in the movie Ratatouille, but “too many people are already naming their kids Remy!”
“Well, we’ll have to improvise,” they wrote, imagining the conversation that led to the name.
Others were sure the name was a terrible misspelling.
“I refuse to believe this and have concluded that she is illiterate with a lisping spelling of Kathleen,” wrote one Reddit user.
Pet owners chimed in, saying the name is actually pretty cute — but not for a human child.
“I would definitely name a girl that rat,” one person wrote. “She might have a brother named Ratthew.”
“And her sister Demice,” replied another commenter.
The gags left a reader in hysteria. “I have to laugh about it,” they said.
“Ratleen, Ratleen, Ratleen Ratleeeeeeeeen,” wrote one person, parodying Dolly Parton’s famous song “Jolene.” “I beg you, please don’t steal my rats.”
A disgusted commenter said the name was too close to “rat spleen” to be comfortable.
They said they wished they could ask the parents what they thought. “Just want to talk, I have questions,” they wrote.
As the shock and confusion echoed through the subreddit, one commenter summed up the general reaction on the forum.
“That’s one of the worst names I’ve ever seen around here, and that’s saying something,” they said. “What the hell.”
