A teenager died and five others were injured on Sydney’s northern beaches

Police are investigating what led to the death of a teenager and five others injured after the car they were traveling in crashed on Sydney’s Northern Beaches on Saturday morning.

The Toyota Hilux was filled with six teenagers aged between 16 and 17 when it left the road and crashed into a tree on Cabbage Tree Road, Bayview, at around 12.20pm.

Police are investigating a number of factors that may have played a role in Saturday's incident, including speed and road conditions.

All teenagers were injured in the accident. The 16-year-old boy who was sitting in the passenger seat died after being taken to hospital.

The 17-year-old red P driver was flown to Royal Prince Alfred Hospital where he remains in a critical but stable condition.

The other four boys who were in the back seat – one aged 16 and three aged 17 – remain in the Royal North Shore Hospital.

Northern Beaches Police Area Command Detective Superintendent Patrick Sharkey said police would consider speed, road and weather conditions and whether alcohol or drugs were involved.

Sharkey said the scene was chaotic and traumatic and injuries ranged from severe crush injuries to the chest to broken legs.

“We do not believe there are any additional life-threatening injuries at this time,” he said.

He added that there were five seat belts in the car in which the six teenagers were transported.
