A slightly chaotic mix of rain and snow on Saturday night

The winter weather system that will affect the region this weekend is rather weak, disorganized, with limited humidity and operating with only slightly cold air. Late Friday evening, this rather small storm system turned east of Colorado to Kansas. As it spreads east, it will be torn apart even more…further weakening the storm.

Ahead of that system, watch for increasing clouds on Saturday…but daylight hours appear to be dry, with temperatures warming into the 40s by 4pm.

After 4:00 p.m., light rain will spread eastward across the region, with this rain mixing with light, wet snow after 8:00 p.m., with snow heavier between 10:00 p.m. and midnight as colder air blows through the invades clouds above. Down at ground level, temperatures dip into the mid 30’s…just cold enough that wet snow can survive down to the ground and accumulate on grassy surfaces.

This will be a fairly quick hit of wet, sloppy snow, with precipitation turning to thunderstorms and drizzle by 4am Sunday morning.

I still don’t see much build up on this system… maybe a muddy dusting on grassy areas for most of our viewers. The only exception will be in a narrow band from near Fredericktown, Missouri in the northeast to near Flora, Illinois. Slightly heavier snowfall rates there can cause some grassy patches to pile up as much as 1-2 inches…but even here…the roads seem to be mostly just wet.

Beyond that storm system, all eyes are on the system planned for Tuesday night and Wednesday. That far in advance, there are the usual questions…about timing, strength, distance, and temperature profiles. But it’s safe to say that some “shovelable” snow is possible in this storm.
