A six-month ban on snapper and dhu fishing is expected to help restore stocks

A six-month ban on fishing some of WA’s most prized food fish could begin this summer as authorities scramble to save dwindling marine fish stocks.

Banning recreational fishermen from hunting valuable bottomfish such as dhufish and pink snapper would go into effect through the winter and through either the popular summer or spring season, depending on which option Fisheries Minister Don Punch backs.

It is one of several measures being launched to help rebuild stocks of all demersal scalefish that are not being rebuilt fast enough under the state government’s 2010-2030 recovery plan.

Mr Punch said all measures under consideration ultimately aim to halve the state’s total catch until fish stocks have recovered.
