SANIBEL ISLAND, Florida. – A woman living on Sanibel Island thought she would not survive when Hurricane Ian swept through the area.
Jennifer O’Neill filmed the final goodbye to her family in heartbreaking videos captured during the height of the storm.
Luckily she survived and is telling her story.
O’Neill was stranded at her home when the water began to rise.
She began recording what she thought her final moments might be.
She was eventually rescued from the island by boat.
Local 10 News spoke to her about those horrifying moments at her home.
The Sanibel Causeway was damaged by Hurricane Ian. It’s the only way on and off the island.
Repairs have begun, but the bridge is not expected to be operational until the end of October.
Meanwhile, O’Neill is staying with a friend in nearby Cape Coral.
She was able to take the boat home a couple of times, taking more important personal items with her.
O’Neill was just one of thousands trapped during the storm. Some people climbed onto their roofs as the water continued to rise.
And in so many cases, the victims did not come out alive.
