It’s very easy to misinterpret a TikTok sound, but what happens when a misinterpretation is generally accepted and a new interpretation develops?
The audio is an excerpt from a 2016 song by the Orlando, Florida-based duo SALES, called “Pope Is a Rock Star,” and the sound has been used on over 2.5 million TikToks. The song went viral on TikTok in early December and users deebo.spins posted a popular version of the sound on December 2nd.
But the lyrics “Pope is a rock star” were clearly misheard as “Go little rock star”, a phrase often found in TikToks that uses sound. Many videos are encouraging or emotional or focus on children or pets.
Where does it come from?
Lauren Morgan and Jordan Shih debuted SALES in 2013, independently releasing several bedroom-pop singles, leading to self-release in 2016. SALES LP, including “The Pope is a rock star.”
As shown in many TikToks, “Pope is a rock star” is the actual lyrics but the group has no problem with misinterpretation.
“It’s a really interesting lyric they’re listening to and the trend is very rewarding,” Morgan told the Daily Dot.
The song, uploaded in December on the YouTube channel Vibe Music, has had more than 2 million views, and the comments seem to reflect Morgan’s opinion. One commenter said: “I could be ‘pope is a rock star’ but ‘little rock star’ gives me a sense of comfort. Others said that listening to “Go little rock star” motivated them. TikTok’s comment sections are also filled with people who claim “Little Rock Star” works better.
The song’s popularity also became an online hit for the band.
But TikTok is also creating new versions of songs. A popular mix that replaces “Pope is a rock star” with “Popular Vine”What the hell, Kyle? ”
It was also paired with Post Malone’s “Rockstar”.
This isn’t the first time SALES songs have gone viral on TikTok: Two more singles, “Renee” and “Lunar New Year, “Before” Pope is a rock star. “Last year, Morgan told Stereo: “We haven’t released music in three years and our music is doing better than ever.” SALES now has a TikTok account, even though it only has one intro video.
“We’re an indie band,” Morgan told the Daily Dot. “We worked on and recorded these songs in our bedroom. The songs are really special to us, but we never would have thought they would reach so many people.”
