A mountain in Yellowstone National Park was renamed in honor of massacred Native Americans – Boston News, Weather, Sports

(CNN) – Yellowstone National Park has renamed one of its mountains to honor Native Americans and not the US Army captain who massacred them.

Once named for Gustavus Doane, Mount Doane has been renamed First Peoples Mountain, the National Park Service (NPS) announced on Thursday. The 10,551-foot peak stands east of Yellowstone Lake in the country’s first national park.

Doane carried out an attack against the Piegan Blackfeet in 1870, now known as the Marias Massacre, killing at least 173 Native Americans, including many older tribal members and children who had contracted smallpox, according to the NPS.

“Doane lovingly wrote about this attack and bragged about it for the rest of his life,” NPS said in a press release.

Blackfeet tribe member Tom Rodgers told CNN the indigenous community has long “urged our government to do what is right and moral.”

“We heard our Blackfeet sisters scream as they ran to the river on that cold January morning in 1870,” said Rodgers, also an adviser to the Rocky Mountain Tribal Council. “We heard her cry for justice. We sought justice. We were looking for accounting. We sought a reckoning with history. It took far too long for this healing journey to arrive.”

“Finally, hope and history rhyme,” he added.

Doane was a key member of the 1870 Washburn-Langford-Doane Expedition that explored Yellowstone before it became a national park.

The “announcement follows a 15-0 vote approving the change by the US Board on Geographic Names (BGN), the federal agency responsible for maintaining consistent use of geographic names across the federal government,” NPS said.

“Yellowstone has been in contact with all 27 associated tribes over the past few months and has received no opposition or concerns about the change.”

The new name was also supported by recommendations from the Rocky Mountain Tribal Council, the Wyoming Board of Geographic Names, and the NPS.

Yellowstone may also decide to change “other derogatory or inappropriate names in the future,” NPS said.

This is a step toward better representing Indigenous communities and accurately depicting their history, Rodgers said.

Quote from Walt Whitman’s poem “reconciliationHe added: “We can now turn to the 200 women, children and elders who were massacred that day and say: may their souls be at peace and may ‘the hands of the sisters of death and night be gently washed unceasingly will always be this polluted world.’”
