A man who disappeared almost a decade ago has been found dead under a new name

A man whose disappearance was featured in a TV series nearly a decade ago has been found dead – and with a new name.
Robert Hoagland was last seen at a gas station in Newtown, Connecticut on the morning of July 28, 2013. The next day, he neither picked up a family member from the airport nor went to work.
Police called for a social check and found Hoagland’s wallet, phone, medication and family car at his home, but he was nowhere to be seen.
The case remained open for years as people across the country reported possible sightings of Hoagland. His high-profile disappearance made it onto the television series Investigation Discovery Disappeared.
On Monday, the Sullivan County Sheriff’s Office in upstate New York contacted the Newtown Police Department with a message that they had responded to the “early death” of a man in Rock Hill. The man was not initially identified, but investigators soon found documents bearing Hoagland’s name.
Newtown Police confirmed Hoagland’s identity on Tuesday. He was 59 years old.
Hoagland had lived under a different name in Sullivan County since around November 2013.
“It’s quite confusing,” Hoagland’s son Christopher told NBC News on Thursday. “To be honest, we’re just trying to deal with it. I haven’t really figured out any details.’
Christopher, who lives in Minnesota, will meet family in Connecticut or New York. They don’t know why Robert gave up his life in Connecticut.
There was no sign of foul play on Robert’s body, which was taken to a coroner for an autopsy.
Additionally, according to police, there was “no criminal aspect” to Robert’s disappearance.
The Disappeared episode, which aired in 2016, included the synopsis: “When Robert Hoagland fails to pick up his wife from the airport, she is upset. His son tells investigators his father bumped into some shady men days earlier.
“Security cameras show him buying a ticket the day he disappeared, but everything he owns is still at his home. What made Robert Hoagland disappear?’
