A man drowns on Cudmirrah Beach on NSW’s south coast as the state battles heatwaves

A man has drowned on a NSW beach as police are urging residents and visitors to be careful in the water as warmer temperatures are predicted to continue throughout the weekend.
Emergency services were called to Cudmirrah Beach, about 200 kilometers south of Sydney, just after noon on Saturday.
It is believed the man was receiving CPR when rescue personnel arrived at the beach and a rescue helicopter was also present.
“Despite the efforts of NSW Ambulance paramedics, the man died at the scene,” NSW Police said in a statement. The man’s age was not yet known.
The death comes as the Bureau of Meteorology forecast low-intensity heatwaves across much of NSW on Saturday and Sunday.
The state’s Assistant Commissioner for Emergency Management Peter Thurtell said while he advised people to avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day, large crowds were still expected to beaches, rivers, lakes and pools across the state.
“Each year thousands of people are rescued from the surf and many drown needlessly, so I implore everyone to swim only on patrolled beaches and to listen to surf lifesavers for guidance and advice,” he said. “All other waterways require special care when swimming as submerged objects may pose an increased or unexpected hazard.”
Thurtell said the heat is making it extra important for people to take care of their own health and that of those around them.
“While warmer weather may not bother some people, the heat can be particularly dangerous for more vulnerable members of the community, including babies and children, the elderly or those living with an illness,” he said. “If you know someone who may need help – especially if they live alone or are socially isolated – check in with them this weekend and make sure they’re okay and have what they need.”
