Around 1pm on Saturday, during another of Perth’s recent storms, lightning struck a transmission tower in front of Running With Thieves on South Terrace.

The bolt split the pylon, scattering debris across the street and footpath. In addition, some wires fell, exposing motorists and pedestrians to dangerous electrical currents.

Western Power has been working to resolve the incident since yesterday afternoon, blocking the road to oncoming traffic, but the location of the pylon has caused some problems for the electric company.

“The mast is in close proximity to water and gas lines, so it’s important that they take care not to damage any of these pipes while attaching the mast,” a Western Power spokesman said.

Many local cafes and bars closed when the power went out and although the weather prompted many people to enjoy the sun, they had to keep their doors closed.

La Cabana took to Instagram to break the bad news to her loyal customers Sunday morning.

“Unfortunately today we had to call to keep our doors closed!” the post read.

“Lightning struck a utility pole a few houses down yesterday and the South Terrace end has been without power ever since!

“An unusual incident that was completely beyond our control. We appreciate your understanding and our apologies to anyone who planned to come down last night or tonight!”

Madalena’s Bar also posted a similar post on Instagram.

“Closed today, no power in South Fremantle. Until next week!”

But despite the lightning strike right in front of their venue, Running With Thieves stayed open so those craving an alcoholic drink on the south end of South Fremantle were still able to quench their thirst.

Western Power was unable to provide an estimated recovery time for power back on, but has said its customer service team will keep the 290 affected customers updated throughout the process.
