They lost Milos Ninkovic to Wanderers but Sky Blues have hit back with the signing of former Western Sydney star Jack Rodwell.
Sydney FC have struck back after Milos Ninkovic’s defeat by Western Sydney Wanderers by signing former English Premier League midfielder Jack Rodwell.
After playing for Wanderers in his debut season in the A-League last season, Rodwell joined the Sky Blues for two years.
It will certainly add spice to the already heated rivalry between Sydney and West Sydney after Sky Blues were left in anger when Wanderers poached two-time Johnny Warren medalist Ninkovic from them for the upcoming season.
“We know we had significant competition to win Jack and we’re delighted to have a talent like his on our books,” said Sydney coach Steve Corica.
“Jack’s skills are beyond question. He has played at the highest level and adapted very well to Australian conditions.
“I expect him to get even better this season. He’s still in his prime as a footballer and can excel in a variety of positions.”
Rodwell, 31, who made three caps for England between 2011 and 2013, has played in the Premier League for Everton, Manchester City, Sunderland and Sheffield United in an English career that also included a spell with Blackburn Rovers.
Rodwell moved to New South Wales with his Australian wife last year and signed with Wanderers. He was also a member of the A-League All Stars team that played against Barcelona in May.
“I still have so much to achieve here in Australia and I’m excited to achieve that success with Sydney FC,” said Rodwell.
“It’s a great feeling to join the most successful club in the country.
“The squad has so much quality and combined with the winning culture of this football club, this season has the potential to be one of the most exciting in our history.”
