A fresh start in education could mean a fresh start for the economy

This fall, new and former students will have another educational opportunity.

“We have students who have called us, they have some credit hours they want to know, ‘can I come back, can I finish?’ So as long as they haven’t exceeded 90 credit hours on their report card, yes!” said Mindi Schrum, San Juan College’s Director of Finical Aid.

Senate Bill 140, passed by the Legislature and signed into law by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham this year, provides for free college tuition. Schrum adds that it lives up to its name.

“So you could enter a program and do an associate’s degree, earn several certificates that come with that associate’s degree, and then move on to the four-year school. This is a great opportunity to educate the people of New Mexico,” Schrum said.

Boomer Appleman, vice president of student services at San Juan College, said all tuition is covered regardless of the time of year.

“Autumn, spring and summer! Before it was only autumn and spring. By allowing our students to enroll continuously for the entire academic semester, they can shorten their time in school and speed up their time to enter the workforce,” Appleman said.

And just in time when Farmington’s economy could use a boost.

“As we come out of the pandemic and out of the associated economic downturn, we have a lot of vacancies that need to be filled and the way you fill those vacancies is with skilled workers. As such, community colleges and colleges in general are great at preparing students for the workforce,” Appleman said.

Appleman adds that the new law also offers opportunities for Native American populations in the Four Corners who live in or on the New Mexico border.
