A man has died in a suspected alligator attack while searching for frisbees in a lake.

The 47-year-old man was found dead in the water at the disc golf course in Largo, Fla., where “Danger” signs warn people about the giant reptiles.

“At this point, detectives believe the victim was searching for frisbees in the water and an alligator was involved,” Largo Police said.

“There are signs saying that swimming in the lake is not allowed.”

A specialist is now attempting to remove an alligator from the lake to determine if it was involved in the death.

If confirmed, it will be the first fatal alligator attack in Florida since 2019, though people and animals have been bitten from time to time.

Regular players at the Taylor Park Course said it’s not uncommon to see someone looking for lost discs to sell for a few dollars.

“These are people who are out of luck,” Ken Hostnick, 56, told the Tampa Bay Times.

“Sometimes they dive into the lakes and pull out 40 discs. You can sell them for five dollars a piece and you can sell them for ten dollars a piece depending on the quality.”

The disc course advertises online and says visitors “can discover the sport of disc golf at a course nestled in the natural beauty of this park.”

Detectives are now urging people to avoid the lake spanning the course as their investigation continues.

Wildlife officials stress that no one should approach or feed a wild alligator, as it then associates humans with food.

This can be more of a problem in populated areas where people walk dogs and have small children.

Alligators were once considered an endangered animal in Florida, but have since thrived and can be found almost anywhere there is water.

They feed primarily on fish, turtles, snakes, and small mammals, but are opportunistic predators that will eat almost anything.
