A Country Practice, Neighbors star Joan Sydney dies aged 86

Logie Award-winning actress Joan Sydney has died at her home in Sydney aged 86 after a long illness.
Best known for her role as matron Maggie Sloane in A country practicea character she played for eight seasons from 1983 to 1990, she won a silver Logie for Favorite Actress in 1989 for her performance.

Sydney also performed regularly E street as Landlady Mary Patchett and in Neighbors as Valda Sheergold in the 2007-2008 season.
In addition to her regular roles, she has also had guest roles on many other television programs, including sitcoms mother and sonand dramas All Saints, Something in the air and Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries.
In 2013 she starred in the TV movie cliffbased on the life of Australian long-distance runner Cliff Young.
Joan was born in England on September 5, 1936, grew up in Wales and trained as a classical actor at the Oldham Repertory Theatre.

She emigrated to Australia in 1965 and before her television career acted in theatres, musicals and theater restaurants in Perth, Sydney and Melbourne.
She died on December 28, 2022 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease, which was first diagnosed in 2016. She is survived by her daughter and two sons.
