Wolves assistant coach Tony Roberts branded Romelu Lukaku “a big lump” after the Chelsea striker won a controversial penalty in Saturday’s 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues’ club record was made a rare start by Thomas Tuchel after he was stranded on the substitutes’ bench in last weekend’s defeat at Everton.

Lukaku rewarded his manager’s faith with his first Premier League goals since December, the second of which came from the penalty spot after VAR ruled he had been brought down by Roman Saiss.

‘He’s a big lump, isn’t he?; said Roberts, who attended the post-match press conference in the absence of Covid-stricken Bruno Lage. ‘I’m not sure if he goes down.’

However, Wolves rallied and delivered a stunning response, scoring twice in the final 11 minutes, with Conor Coady striking in virtually the final act of the game to secure an unlikely point and stun new Chelsea owner Todd Boehly, watching from the stands.

“Incredible feeling to do it in front of our away fans and I thought we deserved more,” said the Wolves skipper after his late intervention. “Coming back like that shows the character of the team and scoring a goal like that in front of the visiting fans was a special feeling.

“We had a couple of weeks where we weren’t good enough. I thought we might have nicked it, but getting away with a point was good.’

“We had character, discipline and were compact. We love playing for our football club every day, so it was more about performance – that’s what we talked about. It was important that we looked after ourselves.

“It hurts the players and we’re human so it’s not a good thing to hear [people saying Wolves won’t get European football] but we looked at our performances and they weren’t good enough to understand people’s opinions.’
